As is true with so many topics today, there are volumes and volumes of information on the Internet regarding z/OS migration. But a search on z/OS migration usually results in so many hits – many of which are outdated or irrelevant – that one finds oneself overwhelmed and in the position of trying to separate the wheat from the chaff. Where among all those hits are the ones that will provide you with meaningful direction, or with useful information to augment the migration to a current release of z/OS? How can you find what you need without spending hours or days weeding through all the references a search engine provides you, and what are the right search keywords to get what you want?

Based on the extensive research and many searches it took to create the z/OS Migration Starter Kit (see http://www.mainframehelp.com/upgrade_plan_templates.htm), and after writing a few articles on the subject, I’ve compiled a list of best references for migration to z/OS V1.4, V1.5, and V1.6. And don’t forget, OS/390 V2.10, z/OS V1.1, and V1.2 are unsupported and z/OS V1.3 will be as of 3/31/2005, while both z/OS V1.4 and V1.5 are supported until 3/31/2007. If you haven’t already completely migrated to one of those releases, you need to do so now. In addition, z/OS V1.4 is the last release to provide fallback/coexistence support for OS/390 V2.10 and z/OS V1.1, as well as the Bimodal Migration Accommodation Offering.
