With
z/OS and z/OS.e V1.6 becoming available on September 24, 2004, it’s time
to start evaluating the impact it may have on your Information Technology
systems. While we normally
think of new releases in terms of new function or changes to features,
withdrawn features or support often entails the greatest effort and
expenditure of time. So
what’s meant by the “what’s missing” in the title is what’s been
removed from z/OS V1.6, not what should be there but isn’t.
And while we’re at it, we’ll take a quick peek at z/OS V1.7,
and a few other Statements of Direction from IBM.
So here’s what’s been removed from z/OS V1.6, and steps to
compensate:
-
G5
and G6 processors are not supported by z/OS V1.6 or future z/OS
releases. z/OS V1.6 implements a new level of zArchitecture, and as a
consequence, it will only run on the zSeries z900, z990, z800, or
z890, or equivalent processors. The
9672 G5 and G6 models, or the MP3000, or equivalents, will have to be
replaced to run z/OS V1.6. In
addition, z/OS.e V1.6 will only run on the z800 and z890. If
you are still running a G5 or G6 processor, you will have to upgrade
to a zSeries processor before you can run z/OS or z/OS.e V1.6.
-
Certain
other hardware is unsupported.
Specifically, the 9037-1 Sysplex Timer is no longer supported
(use Model 2), and the 9246/9247 optical drives plus 12-inch optical
media are unsupported because OAM no longer supports them (use 3995
optical devices instead). See z/OS
and z/OS.e V1.6 Planning for Installation for supported devices,
at http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/E0Z2B150/CCONTENTS.
-
The
base element of DCE Application Support has been removed. This
function should no longer be needed due to enhancements to products
like CICS and IMS, but if you do need it, Websphere provides it.
-
The
base element of Encina Toolkit Executive has been removed. Due to
evolving technology, this function is no longer needed, and there is
no replacement for this element.
-
Text
Search was to be removed, but now has a replacement.
This
is a change from an earlier IBM Statement of Direction in IBM
announcement letter 203-266. Text
Search can be obtained as a download, at http://www.ibm.com/eserver/zseries/zos/downloads.
-
You
may also have to work around function withdrawn in z/OS V1.5 if that
release isn’t installed. The following items are withdrawn in z/OS V1.5:
-
You
should start planning for function that will be withdrawn in z/OS
V1.7. These features are:
-
Support
for ISAM data sets.
-
Support
for JES2 compatibility mode.
To do this:
-
z/OS
Optional Source code.
-
STEPCAT
and JOBCAT JCL statements. This
will require JCL changes.
-
The
OS/390 V2.10 C\C++ compiler, leaving only the ISO C/C++ compiler.
-
Even
further in the future, IBM will:
-
Remove
support for VSAM IMBED, REPLICATE, and KEYRANGE attributes.
These attributes cannot be defined today, but in the future
they will not be accepted on existing data sets.
-
Remove
the English and Japanese ISPF panels for DFSORT. There will be no replacement.
All
z/OS Statements of Direction can be found at http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zos/zos_sods.html.

are some technical references that will help you eliminate or replace
withdrawn features and support in z/OS V1.6.
They will also be very useful in planning all aspects of your
migration to z/OS or zOS.e V1.6:
